Safety is a major priority when it comes to our children, and the idea of being proactive with regards to their well-being should always extend into the home, where there can often be unforeseen risks. Good news is, there are many things you can do the significantly lessen these risks, keeping your children out of harm’s way. So, if you have young-ones in the home, or are expecting children in the future, here are some kids safety features I think you should consider:
Slip-Resistant Bathroom Tile: The bathroom is one of the most common places in the home for child injuries to occur, slips and falls are often the culprit. However, you can decrease the likelihood of this type of injury by having an experienced remodeling company like NYKB install slip-resistant tile. It comes in a large variety of styles, colors, and shapes, so you’ll be able to prevent injury without having to sacrifice the overall look and design of your New York City apartment.
Installation of Anti-Scald Shower Heads and Faucets in Your Bathroom: Another danger to look out for is scalding water. This can occur if a child grabs the handle and accidentally turns it all the way to hot. It can also happen on its own because of a flush of the toilet or some other uncontrollable incident, which is something we’ve all probably experienced living in older homes and buildings around New York City. There are safety shower heads and faucets that will help regulate the water temperature in your bathroom, making it almost impossible for your child to be scalded.
Guard Your Windows: When your kids get old enough to reach them, windows can become a major safety hazard. There are a few ways my team at NYKB Kitchen & Bath can help you prevent this. At NYKB, we can install window guards, or for a more attractive look, we can add stoppers that will prevent your windows from opening fully, thereby making it impossible for your children to climb out.
Place Smoke Detectors Throughout Your Apartment: Fires and smoke inhalation are extreme risks for everyone, but especially for young children. The best way to deal with this is to find out there’s a fire as soon as possible. In my opinion, you CANNOT have too many smoke detectors in your home. At a minimum, you should have one on each level of your house, one in the kitchen, and one in every bedroom. This is extremely easy and cost-effective to have NYKB install for you during your home renovation.
Do the Little Things on Your Own: In addition to the things you need your contractor to do, there are also many smaller items you can add to make your home safe for your children. Some of these include: putting a locking latch on your toilets, placing plastic caps in all your electrical outlets to prevent shocks, testing your smoke detectors every month, and locking all cabinets that contain cleaning supplies or anything else that could be toxic.
